Income Tax: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the due date for filing an income tax return?

For most individuals whose accounts do not need to be audited, the due date is 31 July of the assessment year. For taxpayers whose accounts must be audited it is 31 October, and for those with transfer pricing reports it is 30 November. A belated or revised return can generally be filed up to 31 December. The government sometimes extends these dates, so please check with us.

Should I choose the old or the new tax regime?

The new regime is the default and has lower tax rates but allows fewer deductions. The old regime may still work out better if you have substantial deductions such as home loan interest, insurance and provident fund contributions. We calculate your tax under both and recommend the one that costs you less.

What happens if I miss the due date?

You can still file a belated return within the time allowed, but a late fee and interest may apply, and some losses cannot be carried forward. If the time for a belated return has passed, an updated return may be possible in some cases, with additional tax. Contact us as early as possible.

I received a notice from the Income Tax Department. What should I do?

Most notices, such as an intimation after processing or a defective return notice, can be resolved quickly if answered within the time given. Do not ignore it. Send us a copy and we will explain what it means and prepare the response.

Do you file returns for NRIs?

Yes. We file returns for non-resident Indians with income in India, such as rent, interest or capital gains, and help with tax on remittances and Form 15CB certification.

Can you file my return if I am not in Madurai?

Yes. You can share documents with us securely and we can discuss everything by phone or video call.
