GST: Frequently Asked Questions

When is GST registration required?

In general, a business must register when its aggregate turnover in a financial year exceeds Rs. 40 lakh for supply of goods or Rs. 20 lakh for supply of services. Lower limits apply in some special category states. Some businesses must register whatever their turnover, for example those making inter-state taxable supplies of goods, many e-commerce sellers and persons liable to pay tax under reverse charge. We can confirm what applies to you.

How long does GST registration take?

Once the application and documents are complete, registration is usually granted within about 7 working days. It can take longer if the officer asks for clarification or requires a physical verification of the premises.

What are GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B?

GSTR-1 is the return of your outward supplies (sales). GSTR-3B is a summary return in which you declare your tax liability, claim input tax credit and pay the tax. Monthly filers generally file GSTR-1 by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th of the following month. Businesses with turnover up to Rs. 5 crore can opt for the quarterly (QRMP) scheme.

What is the GST composition scheme?

It is a simpler scheme for small businesses, which pay tax at a fixed low rate on turnover and file fewer returns. A composition dealer cannot collect GST from customers or claim input tax credit, and some businesses are not eligible. We can help you decide whether it suits you.

I have received a GST notice. What should I do?

Do not ignore it. Note the reply date, keep the documents it asks about ready and contact us. We will review the notice, prepare the reply and represent you before the GST officer if needed.
