Documents Needed for ITR Filing: Checklist | Garry & Associates, Madurai

Use this checklist to gather what you need before we prepare your income tax return. Tick only the sections that apply to you. If you are unsure about anything, bring what you have and we will guide you.

Basic details

PAN and Aadhaar (linked to each other)
Login for the income tax e-filing portal, if you have one
Bank account details for the refund (account number and IFSC), including all accounts held during the year
Last year's income tax return and computation, if filed elsewhere

Statements from the tax department

Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS)
Form 26AS (tax credit statement)

Salary or pension

Form 16 from each employer during the year
Salary slips, if you changed jobs or Form 16 is not available
Pension certificate, for pensioners

House property

Rent received and rental agreement, for let-out property
Municipal or property tax paid
Home loan interest certificate and principal repayment certificate from the bank

Business or profession

Books of accounts, or summary of receipts and expenses for the year
Bank statements of business accounts
GST returns filed during the year
Details of loans taken and given, and fixed assets bought or sold

Capital gains

Capital gains statement from your broker and mutual funds
Sale deed and purchase deed, for property sold
Cost of improvement and expenses on transfer, for property sold
Details of reinvestment if you are claiming an exemption (new house, capital gain bonds)

Other income

Interest certificates from banks and post office (savings, fixed deposits, recurring deposits)
Dividend details
Any other income, such as gifts, agricultural income or winnings

Deductions (if you choose the old tax regime)

Life insurance premium, PPF, ELSS, tuition fees and other Section 80C payments
Health insurance premium (Section 80D)
Donations with receipts (Section 80G)
Education loan interest certificate (Section 80E)
Rent receipts and landlord's PAN, if claiming HRA or Section 80GG

Taxes already paid

Advance tax and self-assessment tax challans
TDS certificates (Form 16A, 16B, 16C) for TDS on interest, rent, property and other payments

NRIs and foreign income or assets

Passport pages showing your days of stay in India
Details of foreign bank accounts, investments and income, for residents
Tax residency certificate, if claiming treaty benefits
